Are you constantly dumping money into the cost of maintaining your pool? Costs of running your pump, heater, and paying for chlorine and other chemicals can really hit you hard. Everyone wants a nice pool but they can be so darn expensive to maintain.
Well did you know that solar powered pool equipment can save you a ton of money? And I know everyone loves to save money. But besides just the money, solar power is much more eco-friendly than most other power sources. So why not help out the environment and save money at the same time?
Here at Solar Powered Pool Equipment I am going to help you do both. This site is to educate pool owners on how different solar powered pool products can help you out, as well as which products are good and which aren’t so good.
Why Solar Power Is So Darn Great For Your Pool
The use of solar energy is growing like a weed. And solar powered pool products seem to really be catching on due to their effectiveness.
Why are they so effective?
Just think about it. The the pool area is the perfect sunny environment for something that relies on the sun for energy.
The 4 Main Areas Of Solar Powered Pool Equipment
This site focuses on the benefits of 4 areas of the solar powered pool equipment world, solar powered pool skimmers, solar pool heaters, solar powered pool ionizers, and last but not least, solar covers.
You can find the best of the best products on the market by reading reviews of products in these categories. Just click on what you are looking for below.
These all can greatly benefit pool owners in more ways than one. And if you are unfamiliar with what any of these are used for, just keep along and I’ll give a brief overview of each.
Solar Powered Pool Skimmers
Solar powered pool skimmers float on the surface of the water and move around pulling in debris. They are a real time saver and can save you money in pool cleaning.
One thing that is great about the skimmers is that they can keep you ENTIRE pool clean, including the bottom. People often don’t think of skimming as being a way to keep the dirt off the bottom. But the truth is that much of the dirt and debris that settles on the bottom starts out by floating on the surface.
You can keep these things running all day at no cost and they require very little maintenance. All you have to do is clean the debris out once they fill.
You will find that having one of these running will save you the cost of running pool vacuums so often.
Solar Pool Heaters
Solar heaters are not actually solar “powered”, as you would normally think of with solar panels. They use the suns heat directly instead of converting sunlight to usable energy.
These are very simple in design and even can be home-made, but you better be crafty if you are looking to do so.
Solar heaters are usually a panel covered in polycarbonate with coils on the inside. The water is pumped through these coils, which are heated from sunlight entering though the clear covering, and then back into the pool. They are hooked up directly to your pool pump.
Besides being a free way to heat your pool, they are also great because they require no maintenance. There are no moving parts of any kind, so there are usually no problems.
Solar Powered Pool Ionizer
Pool ionizers are a great way to keep your pool algae-free without dumping a bunch of chlorine in it. Unfortunately they are less known and not as widely used as all the chemical products.
The mineral ionization technology that they use is backed by science. It is so effective that it generally reduces pool owners’ need for chlorine by 80%. And that means you save a lot of money (chlorine is expensive!).
Solar powered pool ionizers are low maintenance and have no moving parts.
They float on the surface of the water and have an electrode that is beneath, which gives off ions. These ions destroy algae and other micro organisms. This method for keeping your pool sure beats out chlorine and all of its swim suit fading, eye stinging side effects.
Solar Pool Covers
Solar covers are about as simple as it gets, yet extremely effective. In fact, I would say that they are probably the most cost effective method for heating swimming pools.
They lie on the surface of the water, absorbing sunlight and transferring heat to the water beneath them, and preventing that heat from escaping into the air. Because they cover the water surface, they also prevent evaporation, which is very important not only for keeping water levels up, but also for keeping your pool heated.
Evaporation plays a huge role in the temperature of your pool. When water evaporates it requires a great deal of energy. And this lost energy means lost heat.
Solar covers usually are made to cover the entire pool. But there are also “solar rings” (aka solar mats) that are oval shaped and cover only a small area. Solar rings function the same but they are more for a pleasant appearance (they look nice).
The amount of money that a solar cover can save you versus the cost of buying one is out of the question. These things are a must have if you are looking to save money heating your pool.
